Kabali is a gangster who fights for the rights and wages of Tamil labourers in Malaysia. He is opposed by a rival gang led by Tony Lee, a Malaysian gangster; Veerasekaran alias Veera, the second head of the gang; Loganathan alias Loga, the main drug supplier; and Seeni, the main money launderer. Kabali is framed for a massacre at a local temple that killed many people, including his wife Kumudhavalli. He is sentenced to 25 years in prison.
After his release, Kabali reunites with his old friend Ameer, who helps him find his daughter Yogitha, who was raised by a family in India. Kabali also learns that his wife Kumudha may be still alive and living in a brothel run by Veera. He goes to rescue her with the help of Jeeva, an enthusiastic youngster who joins his gang. Kabali also confronts and kills Seeni and Loga along the way.
Kabali then faces Tony Lee, who has allied with Tamizh Kumaran alias Kumaran, the son of Tamilmaaran, a former aide of Kabali who betrayed him. Kumaran blames Kabali for his father's death and seeks revenge. Kabali manages to kill Tony Lee and Kumaran in a shootout at a school where his daughter works as a teacher. He then reunites with his wife and daughter and decides to leave Malaysia for good.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Rajinikanth's performance, Santhosh Narayanan's music, Murali G's cinematography, and Pa. Ranjith's direction, but criticized the slow pace, weak screenplay, and lack of mass appeal. The film has an approval rating of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews. The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote: "The story, perhaps, needed a tighter screenplay, but watch it for Thalaivar athiradi. Nothing more, nothing less!". Wikipedia gave a detailed summary of the plot and the production of the film.
Kabali is a film that showcases Rajinikanth's acting prowess and Pa. Ranjith's vision as a filmmaker. The film has a strong social message and a realistic portrayal of the plight of Tamil diaspora in Malaysia. The film also has some memorable dialogues, songs, and action scenes that will please Rajinikanth's fans. However, the film also suffers from some flaws such as a slow narrative, a weak script, and a lack of mass elements that are expected from a Rajinikanth film. The film may not appeal to everyone, but it is worth watching for Rajinikanth's fantabulous acting and Pa. Ranjith's bold direction.
